The process of drawing, for me, is way of thinking more deeply. It is a fully tactile process that clears away the busyness of life and takes me deeper to a place without a critical voice or limitations. Their I sketch ideas for setting and character in a messy journal that also holds a scribbled plot and character outlines. Once the story is well underway, I begin illustrating whatever I long to see in ink and watercolour. Not every illustration will make it into the final draft, but they will fill my writing space and share the journey with me.

Some writers don't like to share first drafts, and I fully understand the hesitancy. A first draft is a fragile creature, all long wordy limbs, clinging to its creator in the needy way a baby seeks its mother. You must keep it close, wrapped in the soft gray matter of thought, gently pondering its day of birth. And yet here I am sharing, not exposing it completely, but letting you glimpse what is being formed.
